Compete Blog: March Madness in the Search World

Windows Live Search dping well according to Compete Blog ...

...  Windows Live search kicked into high gear in March. Month-over-month Windows Live search queries increased 28.8%, pushing market share up almost 2ppts to just over 10%. Year-over-year, Windows Live search queries were up nearly 52%. Wow! My guess is that there are some dollars flowing out of Redmond that may be driving this. Maybe this April fool’s joke wasn’t a joke.  ...

The overview …

  • Google market share declined 0.6ppts despite 5% volume growth … the first decline in nine months
  • Yahoo! continued the slide with market share dropping another point to a new record low and was the only engine with year-over-year share losses
  • There’s something going down up in Redmond with Windows Live Search queries increasing nearly 30% month-over-month to push market share up almost 2ppts
  • ...

Confusion and uncertainty in the Enterprise Search market ?

Google certainly want's you to believe this, , judging on a post by Google's Rodrigo Vaca :

... Last week's developments in the enterprise search market are sure to bring confusion and uncertainty to many customers. Customers of existing enterprise search solutions will start wondering about the future of the investment they made in the past. Is their product still going to be developed and improved? What about support for a diverse enterprise IT landscape? How long before they're asked to do a painful -and costly- migration? ...

This obviously refers to the announcement of Microsoft to acquire Fast. Google apparently wants Fast customers to believe that there's no future developments and that current Microsoft Enterprise Search solutions don't operate in a diverse enterprise IT landscape ... well they do.

And let's face it Google Enterprise Search does not provide the capabilities Fast Search solutions provide, so exactly how does Google envision a switch to Google's platform, because there's simply no way they can fill the holes.

Microsoft acquired Fast because of the fact that it compliments its Enterprise Search capabilities and not with the intent to move clients over in any form ...

... On the other side, customers of some content management systems just realized that an enterprise search "feature" - or an "express" product, for that matter - is just not enough. Good enterprise search requires a dedicated, specialized system that is secure, returns relevant results quickly, and most importantly, is able to find all content throughout the enterprise, regardless where it is located. ...

Again a little (intended?)confusion about Microsoft's solutions in Enterprise Search. Maybe some external independent research might not hurt : Burton Group, Forrester, ForresterGartner.

Google is tempting you to make a fast switch. I would recommend, think first and ask Microsoft to inform you about its Search strategy and solutions (and not trust the competition to do this for you ;-)) and then make a sound decision ...

Rubicon: Enterprise search met Microsoft Search tools

Microsoft Partner Rubicon houdt 29 januari een seminar over Enterprise Search met Microsoft Search Tools ...

Datum: Dinsdag 29 januari, 9.00 – 13.30 uur
Lokatie: Kantoor Rubicon

Volgens Microsoft moet technologie hier gaan helpen. Over hoe de volgende generatie informatiesystemen dit probleem gaan oplossen (uit “The New World of Work”):

“Over time, these systems will evolve to automatically organize and manage information. A new layer of context-sensitive services will provide users with more flexible and intuitive ways to manage information currently stored in rigid data taxonomies and file hierarchies. Information workers will no longer be frustrated by the “what folder did I put that in?” problem, or have to try to “think like the database” to get the right results from a search query. The software will use intelligence and context-sensitivity to abstract away these artificial constraints on the ability to search, store and retrieve information.”

  • Microsoft Search technologie
  • Demonstratie en hands-on
  • Waarmee beginnen
  • Vanaf 13.00 uur lunch

Enterprise Search at Microsoft with Office SharePoint Server 2007

Good and comprehensive overview of the MOSS 2007 Enterprise Search solution used within Microsoft :

"Like most large companies, Microsoft's intranet contains terabytes of both structured and unstructured content that employees need to find and use on a daily basis.  In the past, it has been difficult to bring such diverse content sets together in a single search center experience, but with the recent release of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 it's possible to allow users to search against different content repositories with just a few clicks.  In this webcast see how Microsoft manages its internal enterprise search experience built on MOSS 2007 both on the central corporate portal site and as search service that is consumed by thousands of internal SharePoint sites and 75,000+ employees worldwide."
