Seagate introduceert 1,5 TB-schijf voor desktop

Grappige ontwikkeling.

Michael Cote: Don’t confuse SaaS with Cloud Computing

Michael Cote of Redmonk wrote a good post on the difference between Saas and Cloud Computing. I think a lot of people go dizzy over all the buzzwords in “SaaS-land”. I found this article well explained the difference between ‘SaaS’ and ‘Cloud Computing’

Current Theory on "Cloud Computing"

… I’ve recently tracked down one of the causes of much confusion about and wheel spinning in cloud computing: it stems from thinking that Software-as-a-Service - software you get, largely, through a web application involving little or no on-premise installs, usually priced by subscription - counts as “cloud computing.”

Indeed, cloud computing is (visually) much less sexy than that. Cloud computing is “merely” what SaaS applications (usually) run on. …

Forrester: European Consumers' Behavior Online: A 2007 Deep Dive

“… consumers are spending more time online engaged in dozens of new bandwidth-heavy activities…” This is an interesting yet obvious conclusion. Broadband has become a commodity in almost every western country and ‘standard’  in many European countries.

When you put ‘ high bandwidth acitivites’  in relation to SaaS what do you get ? Powerfull backend applications running in a browser is an option. It could very well be powerfull applications, rich content ran by powerfull local applications. This is an aspect of what Microsoft calls software + services. High bandwidth makes the location (local / remote) of information irrelevant as it is transported in seconds. Consumers in this case decide how thay ‘process’  the content …

… Forrester has surveyed European adults about their technology use for nine years. We track a wide variety of online activities relevant to consumers' daily lives, and we dive deeply into media consumption, online shopping, entertainment, and social networking online activities to understand how this changes over time. Now that broadband has reached 72% penetration among Internet users in Europe and is almost ubiquitous in some European countries, consumers are spending more time online engaged in dozens of new bandwidth-heavy activities. This deep dive into European consumers' behavior online will give market research professionals the tools they need to bring facts and insights into their company's marketing and strategic planning discussions. …

Grandpa In The Cloud or on Premise?

Over on Alan Lepfsky’s blog i ran into this comic .. :-)

One of the main topics in our industry these days is cloud computing.  There is Lotus Blue House, MS Live, Google Apps,  Saleforce.com, Amazon, etc, etc. etc... but I think Geek and Poke today sums it up best!

Cloud Computing: meer dan een vage term

Cloud Computing nader toegelicht …

Forrester: Is Cloud Computing Ready For The Enterprise?

Experimental stage / no IT involvement (needed/wanted ?) are some of the findings.

.. Cloud computing is a new IT outsourcing model that doesn't yet meet the criteria of enterprise IT and isn't supported by most of the key corporate vendors. It's wildly popular with startups, exactly fits the way small businesses like to buy things, and has the potential to completely upend IT as we know it. And there's a high likelihood developers inside your company are experimenting with it right now. Forrester spoke with more than 30 companies in this market to determine its worthiness for enterprise consideration and found that it provides a very low-cost, no-commitment way for enterprises to quickly get new services and capabilities to market that entirely circumvents the IT department. Infrastructure and operations professionals can try to ignore it as it is just in its infancy, but doing so may be a mistake as cloud computing is looking like a classic disruptive technology. ...

What's in a cloud ?

A colleague referred me to this article by Paul Wainwright about Rackspace / Mosso and their new offering for a truely commoditised hosting offering. Also others like IBM and Google are entering this market so lot's of developements can be expected here .. So ... starting a new category : Cloudcomputing

.. Rackspace subsidiary Mosso this week relaunched its hosting platform as a pay-as-you-grow cloud computing service. There have been noises recently about hosting provider Rackspace’s ability to compete with Amazon’s EC2 service and similar cloud offerings. Mosso is its answer to those critics.

Briefing me on the announcement last week, Rackspace’s senior VP of strategy Lew Moorman told me, “This is a very important strategy for Rackspace … This idea has really blossomed into something we feel is the future of hosting — we really think it’s going to bring something new to the market.”

Mosso the hosting cloud logoRebranded as The Hosting Cloud, the Mosso offering brings cloud attributes to the commodity Web server hosting market. Web developers can select the server stack they want to deploy — including Linux and Windows (both on the same website if they want), plus higher-level components such as PHP, mySQL, Ruby on Rails, Microsoft SQL Server and IIS7 — and the Mosso system implements it on demand. Its slogan: “Code, load and go.” ...
